Paper fascinates me. The colors and textures are so varied, from rough bark paper to translucent laces and shining metallics. I try to shape and arrange the elements of a piece to use those contrasts and to create shadows and depths.
I learned to make paper sculptures in the mid-nineties, from a wonderful book full of works by different paper artists. Bookbinding workshops at Hollander’s in Ann Arbor taught me about other techniques and about glues and tools. Part of the pleasure of making each new piece is figuring out how to build it. There are always surprises and challenges.
In my pieces, I try to take something I have feelings about – a landscape, a fairy tale, a tree – and start turning it into shapes that I enjoy. Seeing the subject of a picture dissolve into lines and spaces and textures creates an intriguing sort of double vision. I love the interplay between the idea of a thing and the way of representing it. The strength and fragility of the paper both limit and inspire the designs.
